Sustainable Technology & Practices

Anchor:

Dates:
Jan 23 - Feb 01
Location:
Auroville
About this fellowship:
Auroville, an international township in South India, is a hotbed for innovations in sustainable lifestyles and life practices. Fellows will interact with experts who would advise them and give them a hands-on experience in technologies around organic food and farming, sustainable building technologies, renewable energy and waste management. Besides building a broader understanding of sustainable technologies, they would, with the help of some long term Auroville residents, immerse themselves in a few of such sustainable communities discussing the advantages, challenges and pitfalls.
Selected fellows will be required to spend two weeks before the fellowship begins, charting an average day in their life using photos and videos identifying points of interaction where sustainable solutions might be found in areas such as waste, water, food and products for home use.
Once at Auroville, fellows will present their observations to a group of Aurovillians, experts and residents. Over the course of the first 2-3 days the experts would present their areas of expertise, giving hands on demos to the fellows. Certain long-term residents would host open houses for the fellows so that fellows can see how people have evolved small everyday solutions that are sustainable in nature. Over the course of the latter half of the fellowship, fellows will identify specific product ideas that they would like to develop or work on along with experts and residents, figuring out how they can take certain theories or technologies back to their own contexts. The outcomes of these mini-projects and discussions will form the bulk of the documentation output from the fellows for UnBox 2012.
