About this fellowship:
This fellowship is an opportunity for students and young professionals to explore ideas and possibilities set alongside the vast craft and art traditions of India. Happy Hands Foundation will lead an interdisciplinary team to a craft village in Rajasthan with the goal of enabling an exchange of ideas, thoughts and traditions in order to facilitate a change in the lives of the villagers. The destination for this fellowship, Samode, is known for its rich heritage, and craft-culture. Over the years, however, the crafts have failed to grow innovatively thereby leaving the villagers in no position to keep up with the dynamic market. Fellows are expected to co-create not just products, but to offer ideas and possible solutions for a sustained living and livelihoods. Crafts to be explored include lac, bandhani (tye and dye), miniature painting, leather craft, applique work and jewellery making. Some families also make musical instruments but that is a dying craft. Green Room has been an HHF initiative to facilitate an exchange of the rural and the modern; of the traditional and the contemporary which gives a wider scope to the artisan to think, and gives an exposure to urban-dwellers into the world of crafts. Fellows will be able to choose the craft they wish to work upon, and are required to invest their skill in offering a solution for sustained living. This can be done through effective documentation, product development, communication etc.
